July 2011 – Planting season begins!
So much has happened since our last post, from the cultivation of our coffee trees to the exciting work we are doing in the community of Los Robles. In future posts, we will be sharing more detailed news of our efforts through images, videos, and updates. Currently, there are 50,000 coffee plants from our nursery being planted under the shade of over 10,000 banana trees that were planted earlier this year. In addition to the low canopy of banana and plantains, there are also 4,000 guava negro trees (intermediate shade) and 500 Elqueme trees (enormous shade trees) already in the ground. With the shade established, the coffee plants are ready to go into the earth, which has been enriched with organic compost. Ernesto and his team of local workers have raised these coffee trees from seed over the last 4 months and will now gently place them in the ground where they will benefit from the rainy season ending in October. By that time we will be harvesting this year’s crop, coming from our established coffee plantations, and thus the cycle continues. Since inception, we have planted approximately 200,000 coffee trees at Finca El Peten, constantly building up our stock with certified organic single estate shade grown coffee. If you’d like to learn more about any particular component of our please let us know! Hasta Pronto!
